theme song of the day
my ipod keeps choosing to play this song when it shuffles. then it was playing today when i went to lunch with a friend. it's a good one, and always makes me smile for some reason. so i figured i'd make it the theme song of the day. :)

overplayed
there are two songs that are played on the radio everyday when i drvie to work, drive to lunch, and drive home for work. i hear them 3 times a day, no matter what radio station i listen to. ok, maybe not the spanish ones...
1. Love Story - Taylor Swift. this one has gotten quite annoying. first of all, she sings a range of what, 4 notes? second, the words make no sense. "you were romeo, i was a scarlet letter". these are two completely different stories, neither of which have a love story that i would like to aspire too. did she seriously just call herself an adulteress?
2. Shattered - OAR. this one is growning on me. plus i find it slightly ironic when i'm driving to work, and it says "i always turn the car around". i'm taking it as a sign.
do any of you have songs that you hear daily? please share!

meditation
i haven't posted in awhile, but i HAVE been thinking a lot lately. a lot. it seems like life is all about decisions. every day decisions that may not affect anybody but ourselves, but also huge life changing decisions that can affect our families and friends, and even people we don't know and future generations. to me, that's a lot of responsibility. how do you go about making decisions like that?
i have also been feeling the need to study lately, almost like a hungering for more knowledge. i want to learn, i want to go back to school, i want to read about anything and everything i get my hands on.
what it comes down to is that i am trying to figure out what the next step in life should be, and i want to make it a good one. something that challenges me, but not to the breaking point. something that will let me feel like i'm contributing and doing my part, not just existing from day to day.
i've been reading a book the my mom gave me awhile back, called "a twenty-something's guide to spirituality- questions you hesitate to ask, answers you rarely hear." there are two sections in particular that hit home to me. one about lds women and education, and one about diverging roads. these haven't necessarily answered all my questions, but they have at least given me comfort to know that i'm not the only one who struggles with these things. anyway, here is a question that is asked in this book that i can really, really relate to. i'm going to quote it, but it sounds exactly like something that i have asked before.
"Sometimes I find myself growing dizzy from my own indecisiveness. Each road has different people to meet and different experiences to be had; these things shape who I ultimately will become. I find myself becoming unduly anxious to make the right choice between two great options; of course, what I really want to do is the Lord's will. Sometimes it seems the importance of the question has little correlation with the clarity of His answer.
The decisions between two goods are hard, and I have constantly inquired of the Lord for guidance. With some decisions, however, there have been no 'bolts of lightening.' With these decisions I have tried to be guided by the peace that I felt. Sometimes I have simply had to start down one of the possible paths, hoping for the best. This has not always proven successful, resulting in self-doubt and fear with respect to later decision-making efforts.
Why does the Lord give stronger answers to some questions than others? Are there circumstances when the Lord really doesn't care what I choose to do? How much does He leave up to me? What is the Lord's role in my agency?"
there is a response to this question by Virginia H. Pearce, which i am currently reading and meditating upon. which leads to the reason for the video... this is meditation from thais by jules massenet, my absolute favorite violin piece of all time. i have done a ton of meditating to it, and it still continues to inspire me. i have a goal of learning to play it before i die...

music & lyrics
my friend amanda wrote a post about remembering song lyrics. this got me thinking, (a dangerous past time, i know) especially since my family played this game at christmas. its called encore, where you get a word and you try to think up as many songs as you can that use that word. its really quite entertaining, especially when you have a group that includes people from different generations and different genres of music. but it also made me wonder why i can remember something like song lyrics, and movie quotes for that matter, but not things that actually matter, such as phone numbers or addresses. i blame it on the numbers, but seriously. i was making a hair appointment when i was in farmington, and when the lady asked for a phone number, i was going to give her my parents number, but totally drew a blank. they've had that number for years... she probably thought i was the biggest blonde in the world. little did she know, i was making the appointment to dye my hair darker... random story for you.
anyway, i've been on this 90's music kick since my ipod broke before christmas, which forced me to listen to my cds on my drive to and from farmington. (hence the backstreet boys comment in the previous post. i also rediscovered my newsies soundtrack, hence the christian bale comment) as you can guess, the majority of my cd collection is from around 10 years ago, before i became a poor college student, then a poor missionary, and then got an ipod... plus, we also played sing star 90's on the playstation when i was home. so here i was listening to backstreet boys, matchbox 20, and mixes that included songs like "i don't want no scrub" or "i like girls that wear abercrombie and fitch" (kate, my now 1 cd is missing, did you take it? :) all the while realizing that the radio stations don't really play very much 90's music. why is that? i remember in high school, the stations would always play 80's music. don't get me wrong, the 80's songs are great fun and i love them greatly, but so are the 90's. some were extremely lame, yes, but still... anyway, here's my toast to 90's music and all the memories that were made to those tunes.
i guess another reason i have been thinking about this is that 2009 means that it's been 10 years since i graduated high school. now i don't have time to reminisce much right now, but i think i'll dedicate my next post to the year 1999. it was a good one...
(i also wanted to play around with the fonts... just indulge me)

10 things i remembered/realized on my drive back to california
1. i've had a crush on christian bale since the first time i heard him sing about santa fe.
2. you don't realize how fun rez roads can be until they are covered in dirty slushy snow.
3. semi truck drivers are the bane of my existence.
4. backstreet boys songs have some of the lamest lyrics on earth.
5. 800 miles across an empty desert is a lot longer than you realize at first glance. a lot.
6. i'm grateful for alco in holbrook, and their cheap sunglasses.
7. dr pepper does a body good. well, at least by keeping you awake so you don't run off the road...
8. dropping a few thousand feet in elevation has quite an ear popping effect on you.
9. cruise control is my best friend.
10. california drivers are really quite speedy. and don't know how to drive in snow. thank goodness i'm not one of them, despite what my lisence plate says...

Emmanuel Moire - Mon Essentiel
another one. i know y'all probably don't like french music as much as i do, but i can't help it. :) this is a love song from le roi soleil, a musical about louis XIV (the sun king) i would really like to be able to see the whole musical. it's not running anymore, as far as i understand. but there is a dvd. BUT the dvd is only for zone 2, which means, i'd have to get someone in europe to buy it for me, and then buy a zone-free dvd player, and hope it works with my tv. so i don't think i'll ever be able to see the whole thing. but one can always dream...

a country fair with ocean air
i went to the county fair last night to see the plain white t's concert. it was pretty good, but i have to admit i only know two of their songs... luckily i made it time for the end of the concert, which is when they played both of those songs. :) anyway, all i had was my phone, so i took a short 30 second video that is really rough, but you can sort of see the sunset amid the palm trees behind the stage while they are playing hey there delilah. i'll be going again on saturday for the rodeo, so maybe i'll have some more pics of the fair.
